Job-related injuries can happen to anyone doing any kind of work, but some occupations are more dangerous than others.

A 2019 report from the AFL-CIO named Minnesota 28th on a list of the most dangerous states in which to work in the U.S. So, what are the most dangerous jobs in Minnesota? Here are the top three.

1. Transportation

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 4,764 U.S. workers died in 2020 as the result of job-related issues. Transportation incidents represented 37.3% of all work-related fatalities that year. In Minnesota between 2012 and 2016, more than one in three work-related deaths resulted from operating a vehicle. Commercial drivers are among the best drivers, but because they spend so much time behind the wheel, they are most at risk for injury.

2. Construction

Construction workers are also in a dangerous industry that features unstable terrain, heavy equipment and large machinery. Working at heights is often part of the job for carpenters, roofers and masons, and falls that cause severe injuries or death are common.

3. Farming

Farming is a significant part of the Minnesota economy. Long hours and work with heavy machinery can result in serious injuries for farmers. In fact, farming ranks as one of the three most dangerous occupations in the state.

Compensation for injuries

If you sustain a work-related injury or illness, you should seek prompt medical attention. You must also report the injury to your employer if you wish to file for workers’ compensation benefits. Keep in mind that the filing process differs depending on the incident and the type of injury incurred. You can rely on legal guidance if you have questions and want to avoid missteps in seeking the compensation you deserve.
